Is an Aetna Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan the Same as a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan?
Last Updated : 10/21/20184 min read
The Medicare program has several components: Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D (prescription drug coverage). Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B, while Aetna Medicare Advantage plans offer an alternative way to get your Original Medicare benefits. Here’s an overview of each part and how they work with Aetna Medicare prescription drug coverage.
What is an Aetna Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan?
Aetna Medicare Advantage plans, like all Medicare Advantage plans, must meet the federal Medicare requirements for the Part C program. All Medicare Advantage plans must provide all the same benefits you are entitled to under Original Medicare, except for hospice care, which is still covered under Part A of the federal program. However, since Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted with Medicare, they may choose to offer additional benefits, such as routine vision, routine dental, hearing services, as well as wellness programs.
Many Aetna Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage. Also known as Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans, these plans offer all of the benefits of Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D in one convenient plan. Keep in mind that Aetna Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans use a formulary, or list of covered prescription drugs and their costs. Each Aetna Medicare Advantage plan that covers prescription drugs may have a different formulary, depending on the location and type of plan you choose. If you are interested in an Aetna Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan, be sure to check your plan’s formulary if you currently take any medications on a regular basis to make sure that your prescription drugs are covered. Keep in mind that the formulary may change at any time; you’ll be notified by your Medicare plan if necessary.
Other things to keep in mind about Aetna Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans:
- You must continue to pay your Part B premium each month.
- Depending on the plan you choose, you may also have an additional monthly premium for your Medicare Advantage coverage, which may vary by location.
- Not all plans are available in every location, and plan benefits may vary depending on where you live.
What is an Aetna Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan?
If you have Original Medicare, prescription drug coverage is limited, and you’ll need to enroll in a separate plan for your Part D coverage. Aetna Medicare Prescription Drug Plans provide stand-alone coverage for prescription drugs; they are meant to complement the coverage under Original Medicare, Part A and Part B. Other things to know about Aetna Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans:
- They use a formulary to determine which prescription drugs are covered and their costs, and the formulary may vary depending on the plan you choose.
- You usually pay a separate monthly premium in addition to your Part B premium.
- They cannot be combined with an Aetna Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan.
- Of note, Aetna may change their Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan formularies at any time; however, they must notify you in writing in advance.
As you can see, Aetna offers many Medicare coverage options for your prescription drug needs. To learn more and find Aetna Medicare plan options that cover your medications, visit the Aetna Medicare page.
