Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey offers Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, Medicare + Medicaid (HMO SNP) and stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans to eligible Medicare beneficiaries in New Jersey. Depending on where in the state you live, you may be able to enroll in one of the following types of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey plans.

Does Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey offer Medicare Advantage plans?

Medicare Advantage plans offer you an alternative way to get your Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) benefits from private, Medicare-approved health insurance companies. These plans are required by law to provide all the same benefits as Original Medicare (except for hospice care, which is still covered under Part A), but they may also offer additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage and coverage for routine vision and dental care and even wellness programs.

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage and other benefits, such as routine vision care. If you enroll in a Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey Medicare Advantage plan, you must continue to pay your Part B premium, plus any other premium due for your particular plan. Not all plans may be available in all areas, and plan benefits and premiums may vary depending on where you live.

Here are some types of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey Medicare Advantage plans.

  • Horizon MedicareBlue Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans: HMO plans generally require you to select a primary care provider to oversee your care and to get all your health care (except medically necessary emergency treatment) from network providers. These plans may include coverage for prescription drugs, routine vision and hearing services, complimentary health and wellness tools, and more. You also pay nothing for limited dental services. Deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance amounts may apply.
  • Horizon NJ TotalCare Special Needs Plan (HMO SNP): The Horizon NJ TotalCare (HMO SNP) is a plan that includes all Medicare and Medicaid benefits. With this plan there is no cost for all prescription drugs and many over-the-counter medications, no cost for dental care, no cost for hearing care including hearing aids and no cost for vision care including glasses and contact lenses.

Does Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey offer stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans?

There are two options for Medicare Blue Rx Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage in New Jersey: the Horizon Medicare Blue Rx Standard and the Horizon Medicare Blue Rx Enhanced. Each has different premium, deductible, and copayment amounts and each of these Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans uses a formulary, which is a list of covered medications. Your plan may change its formulary at any time, but you will be notified when necessary.

Medicare prescription drug coverage is optional, but if you’d like this coverage, it’s important to get your Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage (or have creditable prescription drug coverage) as soon as you are eligible to enroll to avoid paying a late-enrollment penalty with your monthly premium.

Stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans are typically intended to work alongside Original Medicare; you must have Medicare Part A and/or Part B (and live within the plan’s service area) to enroll. In most cases, you can’t enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan along with a Medicare Advantage plan, especially if the Medicare Advantage plan already includes prescription drug coverage.

Can I get a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap) from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey?

If you decide to stay with Original Medicare, another option you may have is to apply for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to help pay for Original Medicare’s out-of-pocket costs. Different Medigap plans pay for different amounts of those costs, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

All the Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield plans available in New Jersey are called “Horizon Contemporary Medigap” plans. The plans available in New Jersey are Medigap plans A, C, F, G, K, and N. Your premium may vary depending on where you live and the plan you select.
