If you’re in charge of home care for an elderly loved one, you know how difficult it can be to manage all your daily tasks: tracking medications, arranging caregivers, organizing finances, even monitoring the home for potential safety issues.

The good news for caregivers is that technology is stepping into the gap, creating apps for seniors and caregiver apps to simplify the process of providing home care for an elderly loved one. According to an article in The Economist, over 165,000 health apps have been brought to market in just the past few years, many of which offer help and support to both seniors and their caregivers. Here’s a look at recent trends in apps for elderly individuals and their loved ones.

What caregiver apps are available for home care for seniors?

Today, there are a number of senior citizen apps that work with your smartphone to help you remotely find and manage home care workers for your loved one. According to Adweek, these apps come with essential features such as:

  • Thorough vetting of home care workers, including driving records, criminal background checks, and verification of any professional licenses and certifications. Some even require home care workers to register with the state’s Department of Social Services.
  • Face-to-face assessment with the family to find the best home care giver match.
  • On-demand access to in-home caregiving assistance at pay-by-the-hour prices.

These elderly care apps are a lifesaver for those times when you need help on short notice, even providing assistance with things like transportation to doctor visits or picking up prescriptions for a loved one. Many of these caregiver apps can be downloaded onto the senior’s phone too, giving him or her more independence. Your loved one can use these senior citizen apps to request a ride to a friend’s house, for example, or get help grocery shopping.

Are there senior citizen apps for caregivers?

A recent article by CBS News highlighted trends in aging in place technology and apps for the senior citizens that make daily living more manageable for seniors and give their caregivers peace of mind. Smart home technology uses apps to remotely control the temperature in your loved one’s home, monitor who comes in and out of the house, and even turn off the stove if it’s left on too long.

Other senior citizen apps actually help seniors remember to take their medications on schedule and alert caregivers if a dose is missed.

One of the more useful senior citizen apps helps caregivers do a thorough safety assessment of their loved one’s home and remove any fall hazards and other potential sources of danger. It also includes information to help you organize your loved one’s health and financial data and stay on top of legal issues such as health care proxy forms and advanced directives.

You can also find apps for the elderly that manage complex health information such as insurance ID cards, disability claims, doctor and therapy appointments, and medication reminders; some even provides news updates related to your loved one’s health conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or diabetes.
