Is a Coventry Medicare Advantage Prescription Plan the Same as a Standalone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan?

If you’re unsure about how Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage works with Coventry Medicare Advantage plans and other Coventry Medicare plans, you’re not alone. Medicare prescription drug coverage is available under the Medicare program in two ways: You can get it through a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan that works with your Original Medicare coverage or through a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan.

What are Coventry Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans?

Coventry Medicare Advantage plans offer members an alternate way to get their benefits under Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). In fact, by law, Medicare Advantage plans must offer, at minimum, the same coverage as Original Medicare (except for hospice care, which is covered by Part A), but they may also offer additional benefits, including routine dental and vision care, and coverage for wellness programs.

Most Coventry Medicare Advantage plans include Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage; these plans give you the convenience of having all of your Medicare benefits (Part A, Part B, and Part D) under one simple plan. Coventry Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage are referred to as Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MA-PD) plans.

If you want prescription drug coverage and you enroll in a Coventry Medicare Advantage Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or Coventry Medicare Advantage*, you must choose a plan that includes Medicare Part D coverage for prescription drugs. Not every type of Medicare Advantage plan includes prescription drug benefits, so always check with the specific plan you’re considering. Keep in mind that stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans generally cannot be combined with Medicare Advantage plans. Typically, if you want prescription drug benefits under Part C, you should get it through a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. For example, if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO and want Part D coverage, you may want to switch to an HMO or PPO plan that includes this coverage.

However, if you enroll in other types of Medicare Advantage plans, such as Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs) or certain Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans, you may be able to add prescription drug coverage with a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan if your plan does not include it.

Coventry is a private insurance company contracted with Medicare to provide benefits; not all plans may be available in all areas. In addition, plan benefits and premiums may differ depending on where you live. You must continue to pay your Part B premiums when you are enrolled in a Coventry Medicare Advantage plan, and you may also pay a separate monthly premium to Coventry for your Medicare Advantage coverage.

What are Coventry Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans?

Coventry stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans are designed to work alongside Original Medicare to help pay for your medication costs.  As mentioned, stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans are generally not combined with a Medicare Advantage plan. It’s important to understand how different types of Coventry Medicare plan types and benefits work together before you enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan; in some cases, you may be automatically removed from your Medicare Advantage plan and returned to Original Medicare if your plan can’t be combined with stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage (for example, if you’re in an HMO or PPO plan that includes prescription drug benefits and you enroll in a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan).

Remember, not all Coventry Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans may be available in all areas, and plan benefits and premiums may vary from place to place. It’s important to sign up for Medicare Part D coverage for prescription drugs as soon as you are eligible, or you may have to pay a late-enrollment penalty along with your monthly premium for as long as you have Medicare Part D coverage. You may owe a late-enrollment penalty any time you go without Medicare Part D and don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage (coverage that is as good as the standard Medicare Part D benefit) for 63 consecutive days or more after your Initial Enrollment Period for Part D.
