Does Medicare Cover Diovan?

If your doctor prescribes Diovan or Valsartan, the generic for Diovan, you may be wondering if Medicare covers this prescription drug.
What is Diovan?
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) publication Medline Plus, Diovan is in a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Diovan may be used to treat high blood pressure, to improve chances of survival after a heart attack, or to treat heart failure.
Does Medicare cover Diovan or Valsartan?
If you’re given Diovan or the Diovan generic, valsartan, while you’re a hospital inpatient, it might be covered under Medicare Part A. As for Medicare Part B, usually medications administered at a doctor’s office or in a hospital outpatient setting are covered, but not pills you’d take at home.
If you take Diovan at home, or you take other prescription medications, you may want to sign up for prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D. You can usually get this coverage as either a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. Both types of plans are available from private insurance companies that contract with Medicare.
To find out if a Medicare prescription drug plan covers Diovan or the Diovan generic (valsartan), you can check the plan’s formulary, or covered drug list. The formulary shows which medications are covered and how much they will cost you. Brand-name drugs like Diovan tend to cost more than generic drugs like valsartan. Also, a Medicare prescription drug plan’s formulary may change each year, so what the plan covered or charged for a drug this year might change in the next year. The formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary.
