If you suffer from depression, your doctor might prescribe an antidepressant such as Effexor (generic name venlafaxine).
What is Effexor?
Effexor is part of a class of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Effexor and the Effexor generic form, venlafaxine is an antidepressant that might also be used to treat social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and certain other anxiety disorders.
Effexor and Original Medicare
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers prescription drugs in specific situations, but doesn’t typically pay for medications you take at home, like Effexor. You’ll generally be covered for medications used for treatment when you’re a hospital inpatient, under Medicare Part A. Medicare Part B may cover certain prescription medications administered at a doctor’s office or in a hospital outpatient setting.
Effexor and Medicare Part D
To get Medicare coverage for prescription drugs like Effexor, you can enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Whether you decide on a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan, you may be able to find a plan that covers Effexor or the Effexor generic, venlafaxine.
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans have formularies, or lists of covered prescription drugs. You might want to check your plan’s formulary to see if Effexor is covered. Effexor and other brand-name drugs usually cost more than their generic equivalents, like the Effexor generic, venlafaxine. A plan’s formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary.
