If Levaquin is what your doctor prescribed, you may be curious whether Medicare covers it. Medicare coverage of prescription drugs like Levaquin is discussed below.

What is Levaquin?

Levaquin (generic name levofloxacin) belongs to a class of antibiotics used to fight bacterial infections, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Levaquin and Original Medicare

Prescription medications like Levaquin might be covered under Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, depending on the situation. These are usually prescribed medications that must be administered in an inpatient hospital setting under Part A or an outpatient hospital setting or doctor’s office under Part B.

Levaquin and Medicare Part D

What if you need coverage for Levaquin when you’re not in a hospital or clinic, but at home? For most of the prescriptions you’d get at a pharmacy to take at home, such as Levaquin, you might want to sign up for prescription drug coverage through Medicare Part D.

You can usually get this coverage through either a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan working alongside your Original Medicare coverage, or by enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan. Both kinds of plans are available from private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. With both types of plans, you need to continue paying your monthly Medicare Part B premium, along with any premium the plan may charge.

Every Medicare prescription drug plan has a documented list of drugs that it covers. This is known as a formulary. Because prescription drug coverage may vary by plan, it’s recommended that you check each plan’s formulary to see if your prescription medications are covered and how much they could cost before making a decision.

In most formularies, brand-name medications cost more than their generic counterparts. If your doctor has prescribed Levaquin, for example, find out if its generic form, levofloxacin, will suffice for your treatment, as it’s likely to be a cheaper option. The formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary.  Medicare Prescription Drug Plan coverage and pricing may change each year so you may want to verify annually whether your prescription drugs are still covered by your current plan.
