If you take the prescription medication Mevacor and are enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), there is generally no Medicare coverage for it, unless you are enrolled in a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan.

What is Mevacor used for?

Mevacor (generic equivalent: lovastatin), is in a class of medications known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly called statins, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) National Library of Medicine. Statins like Mevacor are used to reduce the risk of heart disease and lower the possibility of future heart surgery by decreasing the amount of cholesterol in the blood.

NIH explains cholesterol as a fatty substance that can accumulate along the walls of your arteries, narrowing them and restricting the blood flow to your heart and brain, as well as other major organs. Statin drugs like Mevacor may help prevent or reduce the incidence of angina, heart attack, and stroke, according to NIH.

When does Medicare cover Mevacor?

Under Original Medicare, there is generally no coverage for Mevacor, unless you receive it as part of your treatment while you are an inpatient in the hospital or nursing home during a covered stay. Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) don’t cover prescription drugs, except in very limited situations.

However, if you have Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, your plan may cover treatment with Mevacor or its generic equivalent. Medicare Prescription Drug Plans each use a formulary, or list of covered medications, to determine whether they’ll pay for Mevacor. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan, you can check your plan’s formulary online or in your plan materials to see if Mevacor is covered.

If you are searching for a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan that covers Mevacor, you’re welcome to enter your zip code on this page to start a plan comparison tool that may  help you find one.

Keep in mind that plans may change their formularies occasionally, but they will notify you in writing before any changes take effect.

How can I get Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage for Mevacor?

Medicare Part D coverage for prescription drugs like Mevacor is available in two ways:

  • You can enroll in stand-alone Part D prescription drug coverage to supplement Original Medicare and certain other types of Medicare health plans, or
  • You can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan with coverage for prescription drugs.

If you are being treated for high cholesterol or a heart condition, you may be able to find a Medicare Advantage plan with additional benefits to help you manage your disease. Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative way to get your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits; they must cover everything that Original Medicare covers (except hospice care, which is still under Part A), but they often have extra benefits such as coverage for wellness programs or discounted gym memberships to help you meet your health goals. Some even cover routine vision and dental care. You must continue to pay your Medicare Part B premium while enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
