According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about 1 in 3 U.S. adults have high blood pressure. This common condition can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, which are two leading causes of death in the United States.
To control high blood pressure, you doctor may prescribe lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, and smoking cessation, as well as medication like Toprol-XL.
What is Toprol-XL?
Toprol-XL is prescribed to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Toprol-XL may also treat angina pectoris (chest pain caused by coronary heart disease) and stable, symptomatic heart failure. Extended-release Toprol–XL is formulated as tablets to be taken once daily. Toprol-XL, also known by its generic name, metoprolol succinate, is a beta blocker. According to the Mayo Clinic, beta blockers work by blocking the effects of adrenaline in the body. Beta blockers like Toprol-XL make the heart beat more slowly and with less force, which reduces blood pressure. Beta blockers also help improve blood flow by opening the blood vessels. According to the FDA, you should not interrupt or discontinue taking Toprol-XL without consulting your doctor.
Does Medicare cover Toprol-XL?
Medicare Part A and Part B do not typically cover prescription drugs you take at home, like Toprol-XL. Medicare Part A may cover inpatient prescription medications and Medicare Part B may cover limited outpatient prescription medications. A Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan might cover Toprol-XL. Medicare Part D coverage is optional, and you get it by signing up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan if you’re enrolled in Original Medicare, or by signing up to get all your Medicare coverage through a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. All Medicare Part D plans are available through private companies approved by Medicare.
Do all Part D plans cover Toprol-XL?
To find out whether your Medicare Prescription Drug Plan covers this prescription drug, check the plan’s drug formulary, which is the list of drugs they cover. Some plans have this information online for plan members. The formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary. If your plan doesn’t cover Toprol-XL, or if it’s in one of the higher-priced tiers of the formulary, see if the plan covers the generic equivalent of Toprol-XL, metoprolol succinate, which may be in a lower-priced tier. Consult your doctor to see if a substitution may be right for your treatment.
