Ultram (generic tramadol) is an opiate analgesic used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain, according to U.S. National Library of Medicine. Ultram works by changing the way the brain responds to pain. Ultram may come as an extended-release tablet for people who need round-the-clock pain relief. Does Medicare cover Ultram?

Medicare Part B covers very few medications, and these are usually limited to prescription drugs administered at a doctor’s office or in a hospital outpatient setting or immunosuppressive prescription drugs following an organ transplant. For all other medications like Ultram, you may want prescription drug coverage through Medicare Part D. You can get this through either a stand-alone Part D Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan.  Medicare Advantage plans offer the same benefits as Original Medicare, Part A and Part B,except hospice care, which is still covered by Medicare Part A. . Medicare Advantage plans usually include prescription drug coverage for drugs like Ultram.

How do I find out if my Part D plan covers Ultram?

To find out if a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan covers Ultram, you should check the plan’s formulary, or prescription drug list. This is where the plan explains which medications are covered and how much they will cost you. Brand-name medications usually cost more than generic medications, so you may want to ask your doctor if you need Ultram or the generic tramadol. Make a note that a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan formularies may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary.
