Does Medicare Cover Voltaren?

If you have Medicare prescription drug coverage, your Medicare plan might cover Voltaren (also known by its generic name, diclofenac).
What is Voltaren?
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Voltaren is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication(NSAID) that doctors sometimes prescribe for pain symptoms (for example, to treat arthritis symptoms). Voltaren comes as a topical gel for use on the knees and hands, feet, elbows and wrists.
Voltaren also comes as drops, according to the FDA. Voltaren works by stopping the body’s production of a substance that causes pain, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Does Medicare Part A and Part B cover Voltaren?
If you’re enrolled in Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, you may be aware that it has limited prescription drug coverage. Original Medicare Part A generally only covers certain medications that are administered in an inpatient hospital setting. Medicare Part B may cover prescription drugs administered by a medical professional in an outpatient hospital setting or doctor’s office, such as infusions. Medicare Part A and Part B generally don’t cover prescription drugs you use at home, like Voltaren.
Does Medicare Part D cover Voltaren?
Coverage for prescription medications like Voltaren is available through private Medicare-approved insurance companies: a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan, or a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug stand-alone plan. You may find it useful to enroll in one of these plans for Voltaren and other prescription drug coverage when you are first eligible for Original Medicare. You can also enroll in or switch plans during the Annual Election Period that occurs annually from October 15 to December 7, but if you don’t enroll in Medicare Prescription Drug coverage when you’re first eligible for Medicare, you might pay a late-enrollment penalty.
Does your Medicare Prescription Drug Plan cover Voltaren? You can check your plan’s formulary, or list of covered prescription drugs, to find out; your plan might have the information online. The formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary. If Voltaren isn’t in the formulary, perhaps diclofenac is.
