Medicare and Vasotec

Do you take the high blood pressure medication Vasotec and wonder if Medicare covers it or the generic, enalapril? Learn whether Medicare covers Vasotec or your other prescription medications.
Understand your Medicare benefits and Vasotec coverage
Understanding your Medicare benefits helps provide answers to your questions about Medicare and Vasotec.
Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care and generally does not cover prescription medications such as Vasotec or its generic, enalapril. Medicare Part A also covers skilled nursing facility care and hospice care. Medicare Part A may cover Vasotec if you receive it as an inpatient during a covered hospital stay but generally does not cover medications you take at home.
Medicare Part B covers outpatient care such as doctor visits, outpatient lab work and tests, preventative health screenings and mental health care. Like Medicare Part A, your Part B coverage will generally not pay for either Vasotec or its generic, enalapril.
Is Vasotec covered under stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans?
If you have a stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, you’ll receive a separate card verifying your prescription drug coverage.
Your Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan covers prescription drugs, and may cover Vasotec and enalapril.
When you become eligible for Medicare, you have a 7-month initial enrollment period to select a plan for your prescription drug coverage. If more than 63 days pass after your initial enrollment period is over, you may owe a late-enrollment penalty. This penalty is added to your monthly premium when you sign up for prescription drug coverage.
Prescription drug plan costs may vary according to which prescription medications are in their formulary, which may change at any time. You will receive notice of any formulary changes. Other factors that influence cost include which stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan provider you choose and whether you fill your prescriptions at a pharmacy in their network.
Does a Medicare Advantage Plan cover Vasotec?
A Medicare Advantage plan is another way to get your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits (except for hospice care with Medicare Part A still covers). If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Medicare Part C), your plan also may cover prescriptions such as Vasotec or the generic, enalapril.
Some people may choose a Medicare Advantage Plan due to additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage. With a Medicare Advantage plan, you still pay your Part B premium.
